Itinerary

Day 1 Paro to Thimphu - First Impressions

You arrive at Paro International Airport, one of the more demanding approaches in commercial aviation: a steep descent between mountain ridges that requires specially certified pilots. A Druk Asia guide meets you on arrival before the drive to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital. The afternoon is deliberately unscheduled - a walk through town, a first encounter with the architecture, prayer wheels and daily rhythms of a city that moves at its own speed.

Day 2 Thimphu - The Country in Miniature Thimphu

The day opens at Buddha Dordenma, a 51-metre statue overlooking the valley, before continuing to the Memorial Chorten - a place of active daily worship rather than a set piece for tourists. The Motithang Takin Preserve offers a close look at Bhutan's improbable national animal; Simply Bhutan provides broader context on traditional craftsmanship and daily life. The day ends at Tashichho Dzong, seat of both the government and the Central Monastic Body - a combination that tells you something about how power is organised here.

Day 3 Dochula Pass and the Punakha Valley

The drive east crosses Dochula Pass, where 108 memorial stupas stand against a Himalayan skyline. On a clear day the high peaks are visible to the north. The descent into Punakha brings a sharp change in climate - warmer, more subtropical, with rice paddies replacing pine forest. Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility, sits in the middle of this landscape. Punakha Dzong, built at the confluence of two rivers, is arguably the most beautiful fortress in the country.

Day 4 Paro Valley - Temples and Altitude

Back in Paro Valley, the day covers two significant sites: Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, built in the 7th century and still in active use; and Paro Dzong, which contains some of the finest traditional wall paintings in the country. The evening is free for a walk through Paro town before the trek begins the following morning.

Day 5 Into the High Country - The Bumdra Ascent

The trek begins at Sang Choekor, a small monastery above Paro, and climbs steadily through pine and rhododendron forest. The route is used by pilgrims and is not heavily trafficked; the silence above the treeline is one of its qualities. Camp is set at Bumdra Monastery at approximately 3,800 metres, with views across the valley and, on clear evenings, the outline of distant peaks. Altitude acclimatisation matters here. The itinerary is designed to allow a gradual ascent, but guests should be aware that the campsite is high and the temperature drops significantly after dark.

Day 6 The Descent to Taktsang - A Rare Approach

The morning descent from Bumdra brings the trek to its defining moment: arriving at Taktsang Monastery from above. The monastery is built into a cliff face at 3,120 metres and is one of the most significant religious sites in Bhutan. Most visitors approach from below; this route arrives from the ridge, which offers a different relationship with the site and with the landscape around it. After visiting the monastery, the descent continues to Paro town. The afternoon is unscheduled.

Day 7 Departure from Paro

Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure. Depending on your onward flight, there may be time for a final walk or a last breakfast in Paro before the transfer.

I had initially planned my trip to Bhutan in 2023, but it was postponed until July-August 2025. I approached the trip with an open mind and heart, albeit with limited research. Unlike my usual solo travels, I opted for a guided tour this time. I would like to extend my gratitude to Sonam, who initially arranged my trip in 2023 and was helpful in accommodating changes to my plans. Ugyen was also instrumental in customizing my itinerary and responding to my queries in a timely manner.

Kuzu Zangpola! What an Adventure of a Lifetime! Our adventure in Bhutan was simply too superb in every way beyond words. Right from booking to every steps made in this beautiful land of our tour, the coordination and execution from all levels was just seamless. We were located in Melbourne, Australia but we very glad we booked our travel with Soultrips/Druk Asia in the Singapore office during our previous visit there. Travel Specialist, Ugyen was always patient to follow up and immediate response to our numerous email queries even during the late odd hours had much impressed us.

Many thanks to Kinley and Lhakpa for making our trip so fun and memorable. Especially appreciate their friendships and thoughtfulness.

The visit to the Hermitage at Punakha and the trek up to Bumdra are particularly enjoyable.

Our group of 6 Senior Ladies wanted to experience trekking in Bhutan with a 2-day return Bumdra Camp trek as part of the 7-day Bhutan tour. Except for 1 Novice, the rest are seasoned Himalayan trekkers. Indeed, the 7-hour ascent to Bumdra camp at 3800m is the most challenging I have ever done before. It would have been harder if not for the jovial and encouraging Guide Ugyen who cheers us up along the way. Driver Lhendrup also came to help and dish out sweets and packet juice to boost our energy.

Nothing can be better than to be back to the land of the Dragon Thunder, Bhutan. From 18th - 27th April 24' was my 2nd visit to this beautiful place. For these 10days I had another most memorable & amazing days. Being a solo traveller in Bhutan, we will tends to have plenty of concerns and doubts but I can only said with DrukAsia Team. I feel 100% safe & at home. From the frontline where we arranged the itinerary in Bhutan & queries. Ugyen definitely had provided a top notch service.

My experience with DrukAsia started with the coordinator, Ugyen Dema, stationed in Singapore. I took reference from DrukAsia's suggested 10-Day itinerary and customised to my preferred 2-pax itinerary. During all my visits to the office, coordinator Ugyen Dema was patient in answering all questions and frank to counter propose suggestions that were not feasible to the itinerary.

I have been a solo female traveler for many years so was apprehensive about having 2 strangers with me on this entire trip. My guide Gem Dorji is a young but experienced guide. He respected my need for solitude and space and would "hang around me" just sufficiently and allowed me a lot of personal time to take lone walks. My driver Dorji Gyeltshen was ex-military, very respectful and skilled road warrior. If he walked with me, he too respected my need for personal space. He'd be first to spot me whenever I returned from my walks. I've never felt so protected in a foreign land. We started as strangers but parted as friends.
